On a hot summer day when the sun is high, gardeners seek refuge in the shade. The dappled light from the tree canopy provides divine relief from the heat. A hammock beckons. The scene is almost perfect—except sometimes a shady glen feels shadowy, almost chilly, in its want of cheer. There are no flowers here. But more than shadows can grow in the shade. Add this mix to your favorite shady recess to balance the dark with light—and fill your shady spot with the joy of flowers.
Includes Five Spot, Baby Blue Eyes, Chinese Houses, Chinese Forget-Me-Not, and Rocket Larkspur Mix.
500 seeds sow a 3'x10' garden plot.
About the Artist:
Artwork by Martha Robinson. Martha captures the feeling of a shady garden by using the process of encaustic and embedding hand-drawn elements in layers of wax. Floating gold symbols evoke the mystery we experience when resting in the dappled light of a tree.
Each year, Hudson Valley Seeds commissions contemporary artists from around the United States to tell the story of a particular seed variety. That art and those seeds combine to create an Art Pack, a unique celebration of the diverse stories of seeds and their stewards.Directions:
Direct sow in prepared, clean, bed after last spring frost. Select an area in full to partial shade. Packet covers a 3'x10' area; scatter and rake in. Keep area moist but not wet. When seedlings set true leaves, thin to 8-12". Or, start indoors and transplant after frost.
